金秋送爽，硕果飘香。今天，美丽的吉外迎来了年轻的新主人。初秋的校园，因为3421名新同学的到来而充满了勃勃生机。首先，我代表全体师生员工，向你们的到来表示热烈的欢迎！向受到表彰的先进集体和优秀个人表示衷心的祝贺！
On this golden autumn day, we welcome you to Jilin International Studies University. Your beautiful presence has brought new vitality to our campus. First of all, on behalf of all faculties, students and staff, I would like to extend a warm welcome to you all and my heartfelt congratulations to the commended advanced collectives and outstanding individuals!
每年的九月，学校都要迎来新同学，每当看到你们充满阳光朝气、饱含求知欲望的青春面孔，我都感到非常欣喜、倍加振奋，你们的到来给学校注入了新的气息，带来了新的动力。特别是昨天在阅兵式上，看到你们英姿飒爽、精神饱满、队列整齐、纪律严明，还有令人难忘而生动的女子匕首操、男子擒拿拳、特种战术以及文艺团体操的精彩表演。你们良好的风貌和敢于拼搏的精神，令我非常欣慰，为之动容，我不由得想对大家说：凡事欲其成功，必要付出代价，那就是努力奋斗！做任何事情都要有恒心和毅力，只有满怀信心、满怀勇气、不畏艰辛，坚持到底就是胜利。同学们，你们在短短的十七天就取得了这样优异的军训成果，圆满完成了大学阶段的第一课，用实际行动证明了自己！我为你们感到骄傲和自豪！
Each September, JISU welcomes a bunch of new students. I am gratified and encouraged whenever I see the young faces full of vitality and eagerness for knowledge. Your arrival has injected new energy into our school. Yesterday, at the military parade, I saw your heroic, energetic, neat queue and strict discipline, as well as the unforgettable and vivid performances of women's dagger gymnastics, men's boxing, and special tactics and troupe gymnastics. Your fine style and spirit of daring to work hard really touched me. I want to tell you: No pains, no gains. You need to work hard to achieve what you aspire to. Whatever we do, we should do it with perseverance. Only when we are full of confidence, courage and fearlessness of hardships, can we succeed. Students, you have achieved such excellent military training results in just 17 days, successfully completed the first lesson of your college life, and proved yourself with actions! I am so proud of you!
同学们，经过十年寒窗，你们迈入了大学的殿堂，承载着新的梦想。进入大学，你们首先要思考：什么是大学？大学是人类文明和社会进步的综合标志，不仅是知识与文化传播的殿堂，也是道德和人格养成的殿堂；大学是精神的高地，是强调责任感的地方，因为它肩负着国家强盛和民族振兴的使命；大学是以人为中心，旨在造就高尚的人格、树立正确的价值观；大学能够教会你如何做人、如何学习、如何做事，使你们不断发现自我、认识自我和塑造自我；大学使你们视野开阔、目光远大、热爱知识，帮助你们探索和选择未来人生之道路，成为合格的世界公民和未来国家的栋梁之材！
After ten years of hard work, you have finally entered university where you can embrace new dreams. When entering a university, you must first think: what is a university? University is the comprehensive symbol of human civilization and social progress. It is not only the palace of knowledge and cultural dissemination, but also the palace of moral and personality cultivation. University is a spiritual highland that stresses the sense of responsibility, because it shoulders the mission of national prosperity and national rejuvenation. University is people-centered, aiming to nurture noble personality and establish correct values. It teaches you how to be a person, how to study and how to do things right, so that you can constantly know yourself and shape your life. University enables you to have a broad vision and love for knowledge, guide you to explore and choose the path of future life, and become a qualified world citizen and pillar of the country!
同学们，吉外是一所伴随改革开放伟大进程不断快速健康、可持续发展的大学。26年来，学校始终秉承“一切为了学生成人、成才、成功”的办学理念和“以学生为中心、办最负责任教育”的教育理念，凝心聚力，砥砺前行，实现了一个又一个跨越，成为了中国民办高等教育的见证和缩影。
Dear students, JISU has undergone rapid, healthy and sustainable development along with the great process of reform and opening up. Over the past 26 years, adhering to the school running philosophy of "putting students first and helping them succeed" and the education philosophy of "carrying out student-centered and most responsible education", JISU has made concerted efforts to forge ahead, achieved breakthroughs one after another, and become the witness and epitome of China's private higher education.
在吉外发展历程中，拥有多个全国第一：第一所民办本科外国语院校；第一所捐资办学的民办高校；第一所也是唯一一所承担国家教育体制改革——探索非营利性民办高校办学模式试点任务的民办高校；第一所民办省属重点高校；第一所入选国家“中西部高校基础能力建设工程”的民办高校；第一所获批硕士学位授权单位的民办高校；第一所升格为大学的民办高校；第一所获批博士立项建设单位的民办高校。2020、2021连续两年位居软科中国民办大学排行榜首位。今日之吉外，已经发展成为一所环境优美宜人、校风纯朴厚重、办学条件充裕、社会声誉良好的外国语大学，成为中国非营利性民办高校的一面旗帜，引领着我国民办高等教育改革发展的方向。
JISU is proud to be the first in many aspects. It is the first private undergraduate university of foreign languages; the first private university funded by social donations; the first and only private university to undertake the pilot task of national education system reform - exploring the school running mode of non-profit private universities; the first private provincial key university; the first private university selected into the national“basic capacity building project of colleges and universities in Central and Western China”; the first private university approved as an authorized unit of conferring master's degree; the first private college to be upgraded to university; the first private university approved as a doctoral project construction unit. In both 2020 and 2021, it was ranked first among Chinese private educational institutions for social sciences on the Shanghai Jiao Tong University’s Academic Ranking of World Universities. Today, JISU has developed into an international studies university with a beautiful and pleasant environment, pure spirit, abundant school running conditions and a great social reputation. It has become a banner of China's non-profit private colleges and universities, leading the direction of the reform and development of China's private higher education.
当前，学校正在实施新十年发展战略规划，全面开启二次创业，加快向精品、非营利、应用型、国际化、特色鲜明的高水平外国语大学目标迈进！
At present, the university is implementing the development strategic plan for the next decade and has embarked on a new entrepreneurial journey for school development and accelerating the goal of becoming a leading non-profit international studies university that is application-oriented, thoroughly cosmopolitan, and yet distinctly and proudly Chinese.
吉外因梦想而生，因梦想而兴，是一所拥有梦想、尊崇梦想、成就梦想的大学。今天的你们站在了新的人生起点上。新的起点，意味着新的梦想，同时也意味着开始新的征程。对大家而言，尽管家庭背景、个性禀赋、成长经历、生活旨趣各不相同，但你们都有一个共同的目标，那就是要在吉外度过最有意义的大学生活，让最美好的青春光彩在吉外绽放，让年轻的生命在吉外增值，让人生的理想从吉外启航！同学们，吉外为你们提供了良好的学习环境，但要成就梦想，你们自身必须付出不懈努力。同学们，不论是刚踏入大学校门的本科生，或是步入下一学习阶段的研究生，在你们即将开启人生新篇章的时候，借此机会，我向你们提出三点希望：
JISU was born and cultivated by dreams. It is a university with dreams, respecting dreams and achieving dreams. Today, you are standing at a new starting point in your life. A new starting point means a new dream, a new journey. Although you may have different family background, personality endowment, and growth experience, you all share a common goal, that is to spend the most meaningful college life in JISU and let the ideal of life set sail from here! Students, our school will provide you with an enabling learning environment. At the same time you must also make unremitting efforts to achieve your dreams. Students, whether you are undergraduates who have just entered college or graduate students who have entered the next stage of study, when you are about to start a new chapter in your life, I would like to share my three expectations for you:
希望你们胸怀祖国、勇担重责。习近平总书记指出“当代中国青年是与新时代同向同行，共同前进的一代，要勇于创新、敢为人先，深刻理解和把握时代潮流和国家需要”。同学们，希望你们要树立远大理想。 理想是指路明灯，没有理想，就没有坚定的方向；没有方向，就没有真正的人生。你们生逢盛世，肩负重任，如今的中华民族正处于迈向伟大复兴的新时代，我国已经实现第一个百年目标，正加快向第二个百年目标迈进。
I hope you have our country in mind and shoulder responsibilities bravely. General Secretary Xi pointed out that "contemporary Chinese youth are a generation that walks in the same direction and advances together with the new era". You should have the courage to innovate, be the pioneers, and deeply understand and grasp the trend of the times and national needs. Dear students, I hope you will set up lofty ideals. Ideal is the beacon. Without ideal, you will have no direction; and without direction, you will not find the true essence of life. You were born in the best of times and shoulder great responsibilities. Today, the Chinese nation has ushered into a new era of great rejuvenation. China has achieved the first centennial goal and is accelerating its progress towards the second centennial goal.
我们所处的也是一个深度变革的时代，特别是新冠肺炎疫情肆虐以来，世界格局发生巨大调整，国际局势风起云涌，越是在时代漩涡中，世界越需要智慧和思考，探索前进的方向。作为新时代的大学生，你们要认清形势，志存高远、胸怀祖国，勇担重责，坚定爱国报国信念。要知道“爱国之心，实为一国之命脉”，你们要不忘初心使命，将“国家的前途，民族的命运，人民的幸福”抗在肩上，“立大志、明大德、成大才、担大任”，时刻铭记“学好外国语，做好中国人”，希望你们树立为祖国永久奋斗、赤诚奉献的坚定理想，拓展人生格局，投身伟大时代，努力把自己培养成为堪当民族复兴大任的时代新人！
We are also in an era of deep change. Novel coronavirus has been raging like a storm, and the world has undergone tremendous adjustments. The international landscape is evolving. The world needs more wisdom and talents to explore the way forward. As college students in the new era, you should have a clear understanding of the situation, have high aspirations, shoulder due responsibilities bravely, and strengthen patriotism and serve the country heart and soul. You should know that "patriotism is the lifeblood of a country". You should not forget your mission, bear in mind "the future of the country, the destiny of the nation and the happiness of the people", "set great aspirations, clarify great morality, become great talents and shoulder great responsibilities", always remember to "be a Chinese soul and a communicator for the world", and I hope you will establish a firm ideal of hard work and sincere dedication to the motherland, devote yourself to the great era, and strive to cultivate yourself into a new generation that can live up to the great task of national rejuvenation!
希望你们不负韶华、勤奋学习。“九层之台，起于累土；千里之行，始于足下。”大学阶段，恰同学少年，风华正茂，有浩瀚的书籍引路，可以心无旁骛求知问学。“为学始知道，不学亦徒然”。大学是汲取知识、提升能力的重要阶段，希望同学们把学习作为第一要务，牢记“会通中外、砺志敦材”的校训，牢固树立为服务国家、服务社会而学习的端庄学习观。
I hope you live up to your youth and study hard. Just as a huge tree must grow from a tiny sprout, and a nine-storied terrace must be built upon its lowly base, a thousand-mile journey must start with the very first step. In college, you can concentrate on seeking knowledge and learning. "Only by learning can you know the world". University is an important stage of learning knowledge and enhancing ability. I hope you will take learning as the top priority, keep in mind the school motto of "being able to communicate with different cultures and sharpen your ambition and be a useful talent", and firmly establish a dignified learning concept of learning to serve the country and society.
同学们，正所谓“青春虚度无所成，白首衔悲亦何及”，时间是一切成就的土壤，给勤勉的人带去无穷的智慧和力量，“凡事预则立，不预则废”“业精于勤，荒于嬉”，学习贵在勤奋，你们要珍惜在吉外的学习时光，充分利用好吉外良好的教育教学环境，走进图书馆，在知识的海洋中吸取力量；走进地球村，感受多元文化的交融与碰撞；走进体育场，在运动拼搏中磨砺意志。要知道，实践出真知，创新无止境，同学们要以学校公益精神为引领，积极参与公益事业，参与各项有意义的社会实践和志愿服务活动，培养高度社会责任感，不断提升自己的语言综合运用能力、跨文化交际能力、实践创新能力和适应发展能力，努力使自己成为综合素质高的应用型、复合型、外向型高层次、高级外语外事人才，未来用你们的真才实学服务社会，用你们的创新创造贡献国家！
Students, just as the saying goes, if you idle away your youth time, you will regret deeply in old age. Time is the soil of all achievements, bringing infinite wisdom and strength to diligent people. You should have a plan and be prepared. You should cherish your time of study in JISU and make full use of the good education and teaching environment here. Go to the library and immerse yourself in the ocean of knowledge; go to the global village and feel the blending and collision of multiple cultures; go the gym to sharpen your will in sports. True knowledge, which comes from practice and innovation, will bring out great possibilities. You should take the school's public welfare spirit as the guide, actively participate in public welfare undertakings and various meaningful social practices and voluntary service activities, cultivate a high sense of social responsibility, and constantly improve your ability in comprehensive language application, cross-cultural communication, practical innovation and adaptive development, strive to become application-oriented, compound, internationally-oriented, high-level foreign language talents with comprehensive quality. In the future, use your real talents to serve the society and contribute to the country with your innovation and creation!
希望你们涵养道德，磨砺意志。“德者，本也”，德是一个人成长的根基。一个人的品德如何，直接决定了这个人对社会的价值和贡献，道德品质是衡量一个人综合素质的基本标准。“一个知识不健全的人可以用道德去弥补，而一个道德不健全的人却难于用知识去弥补。”道德对于个人、对于社会，都具有基础性意义，要“简单做人、踏实做事”。做人做事第一位的是崇德修身。
I hope you will cultivate morality and sharpen your will. Virtue is the foundation of one's growth. A person's moral character directly determines his or her value and contribution to society. Moral quality is the basic standard to measure a person's comprehensive quality. It is of fundamental significance to individuals and society. We should "be a simple man and do things in a down-to-earth manner". The first thing in life and work is to cultivate morality.
希望同学们把正确的道德认知、自觉的道德养成、积极的道德实践结合起来，明大德、守公德、严私德，做一个品德高尚的人。要牢记“天下大事必从细而做”的吉外作风，把每一件事情做到最好。要勇于实践，在实践中丰富阅历增长才干、练就真本领，提高自身的素质能力，努力把自己培养成为知识、能力、人格全面发展的人，为今后的腾飞积蓄能量。
I hope that you will cultivate and practice morality. Do keep in mind the JISU motto of "major events in the world must be done in detail" and do everything to the best, have the courage to practice, enrich experience in practice, increase talents, cultivate real skills, improve your quality and ability, and strive to be all-round talents so as to lay a solid foundation for future development.
“艰难困苦，玉汝于成”。成功者，总是在挫折中不断奋起、永不气馁、永不言败。要知道，成功是艰辛的，没有捷径可走。任何成功者必须是一个积极主动的人，诚实自律的人，拥有良好习惯的人，愿意付出更多努力的人。成功不在于有无天资，而在于有无理想，成功的秘诀在于坚持、在于恒心。同学们，只有拼出来的成功，没有等出来的辉煌。希望同学们迎难而上，挑战自我、超越自我，拥抱新时代、奋进新时代；让青春在为祖国，为人类的奉献中绽放异彩！
"Difficulties and hardships are the touchstone of a successful person". Successful people always rise up in setbacks. There is no shortcut to success. If you want to succeed, then you must be proactive, honest and self-disciplined, have good habits and be ready to go the extra mile. Success is not about being talented or not, but about whether you have ideals or not. The secret of success lies in persistence and perseverance. Dear students, you can only fight for your own success. I hope you will meet the difficulties head on, challenge yourselves, embrace and forge ahead into the new era. Dedicate your youth to our country, and to mankind!
