今天，我们在这里隆重举行吉林华桥外国语学院2017-2018学年开学典礼暨表彰大会。首先，我代表学校和全体教职工，向2437名本科新同学和177名研究生表示热烈的欢迎！向各位家长表示崇高的敬意!向受到表彰的先进集体和优秀个人表示衷心的祝贺！
Today, we’re gathered here for the opening ceremony and commendation conference of the school year 2017-2018. First of all, on behalf of all faculty members, I’d like to extend warm welcome to our 2,437 freshmen and 177 new postgraduates! I’d also like to extend my high respect to all parents and congratulations to all groups and students winning awards today!
同学们，经过十年寒窗，你们迈入了大学的殿堂，承载了新的梦想。你们首先要思考：什么是大学？大学意味着什么？大学是知识的殿堂、精神的高地，是培养高度社会责任感的地方，它肩负着国家强盛和民族振兴的使命；大学信奉价值，大学的目的就是追求真理；大学教会你如何做人，可以探索和选择未来人生之道路；大学教会你如何学习，如何做事，能够帮助你们视野开阔，目光远大，热爱知识！大学教你成功，让你拥有一个有信念，有梦想，有奋斗，有奉献的人生！
Dear students, standing at a new beginning in life after years of hard work, you need to define university and university life. A university passes on knowledge, truth and values and cultivates high sense of social responsibility; it upholds values on your path of seeking truth; and it helps you unfold your future life. It will broaden your vision and lead you onto a path of faith and commitment.
同学们，每当学校迎来新同学，作为校长，看到充满朝气、饱含求知欲望的你们，成为华外大家庭的新成员，我感到心潮澎湃、倍加振奋。特别是在阅兵式上，看到你们精神饱满，队列整齐，英姿飒爽，气势磅礴；还有令人难忘的358人的女子花样队列，女子军体拳，男子擒敌拳以及战术演练方队的精彩表演。你们良好的风貌和敢于拼搏的精神令我十分欣慰，为之动容！我不由得想起，英国作家萨克雷说过：“播种行为，可以收获习惯；播种习惯，可以收获性格；播种性格，可以收获命运！”著名作家柳青说过，“人生的道路虽然漫长，但紧要处常常只有几步，特别是当人年轻的时候。”大学在人生长河中虽然短暂，但却是及其宝贵的，大学是人一生中最为紧要的关键阶段。同学们，我要祝贺你们圆满完成了大学的第一课！我对你们充满信心！
As the president, I always feel invigorated when I see new students coming in. I’m especially proud and excited to see your high spirit and excellent performance at the parade, including the 358-member girls pattern, military boxing and the tactical training performance. I couldn’t help recalling the famous English writer William Thackeray’s words, “Action breeds habits, habits form character, and character decides destiny.” Chinese writer Liu Qing also wrote, “There are but a few key steps in the long course of life, mostly in youth.” University life seems short, but it marks a most important stage in life, so I’d like to congratulate you on completing your first lesson here and I’m full of confidence in you!
亲爱的同学们，每一所大学都孕育着自己的精神与文化。当踏入华外校园时，相信你们已经被校园的优美典雅所感染，相信你们已经感受到这是一所与众不同的大学！华外是一所新兴的大学，是一所因为教育梦想而生的大学。22年前，我在国外亲眼目睹了一个尴尬的现象：许多高层次人才不懂外语，而许多精通外语的人才又不懂专业，复合型、应用型外语人才严重紧缺。我坚定地认为，正在如火如荼发展的改革开放大业，迫切需要大量综合素质高的外语外事人才。
Dear students, every university has its own spirit and culture. I believe, you have felt the unique spirit of Huawai since you stepped on the campus. As an emerging university, Huawai was born out of educational aspiration. When I worked overseas 22 years ago, I noticed the disconnection between foreign language and professional knowledge and the shortage of compound, application-oriented and professional talents. Thus I clearly sensed the need of qualified talents of foreign languages and foreign affairs for China’s reform and opening-up cause.
为此，我开启了艰难曲折的办学之路，希望通过我的努力，为青年学子创造更多实现梦想的机会。正是因为有梦想，对教育有着特殊情结，我与华外的全体师生，坚定信念，排除千难万险，一路走到今天！在22年的发展历程中，学校经历了一个又一个跨越。今日之华外，已经发展成为一所环境优美宜人、校风纯朴厚重、办学条件充裕、社会声誉良好的外国语大学；已然成为引领中国非营利性民办高校的一面旗帜！在中国民办高等教育发展史中，开创了多个“第一”。第一所民办本科外国语院校；第一所也是唯一一所承担国家教育体制改革非营利性试点任务的民办高校；第一所省属重点建设的民办高校；全国第一批获硕士学位授权的民办高校；第一所也是唯一一所将公益性办学思想写入章程，并进行财产处置公证——捐资办学的民办高校；全国第一所也是唯一一所入选“国家中西部高校基础能力建设工程”的民办高校；第一所也是唯一一所获得中国政府留学生奖学金招生资格的民办高校。近年来，学校发展势头良好，取得了显著的办学成绩。2014年，被教育部评为“全国毕业生就业工作50强”，毕业生就业率始终保持在96%以上。
That’s how I started my educational career, hoping to create chances for young students to realize their dreams. It is with this complex and faith that I’ve been marching forward with all Huawai colleagues and students against difficulties and challenges and shaping Huawai as it is today. Huawai has made one leap forward after another on its journey over the past 22 years. Today it is a beautiful, flagship university with favorable social reputation, and it’s keeping many “firsts” in the history of China’s private higher education. Huaqiao was the first private provincial key university, one of the first private universities to authorize master’s degrees, the first and only private university to be a pilot for China’s educational system reform and for “Fundamental Capability Construction Project in Mid-China and Western China”, to advocate non-profitable education and conduct property notarization, and to enroll international students with scholarships etc. Huawai has been enjoying great momentum in recent years with remarkable achievements. In 2014, Huawai was ranked among the top 50 universities in employment rate with over 96% of its graduates being employed right after graduation.
同学们，华外因梦想而生，因梦想而兴，是一所尊崇梦想、成就梦想的大学！同学们，你们站在了新的人生起点上。新的起点，意味着新的开始、新的征程。希望你们在华外度过有一个意义的大学生活。我们期待：你们青春在大学的校园里绽放，让年轻的生命在大学时光增值，让人生的理想从这里启航！

同学们，信息科技助推了经济全球化的发展，习主席“一带一路”构想意味着我国对外开放实现战略转变，体现了中国的大国责任和时代担当，对国际组织人才的需求将远远超过我们的想象。华外的人才培养是致力于搭建中国与世界各国经济往来与文化交流的桥梁。华外的理念是“一切为了学生成人、成才、成功”、“以学生为中心，办最负责任教育”。要求学生“学好外国语，做好中国人！华外传递的永远是正能量！借助于教育部专家组对华外的评价：“华外是一所有境界、有品位、有追求、讲究修养、很阳光、很有定力的民办大学，是全国民办高校的旗帜”。同学们，不论是刚踏入大学校门的本科生，或是即将步入下一学习阶段的研究生，从今天开始，你们都将在华外开启新的人生航程。同学们，希望你们振奋精神，怀揣梦想，奋力前行!
Dear students, information technology boosts the development of economic globalization. The Belt and Road Initiative symbolizes the strategic transition in China’s opening up to the outside world and China’s leading role in shouldering responsibilities of the era, and hence the unimaginable need for international organizational talents, which echoes with the goal of talent cultivation in Huawai. Huawai aims at cultivating students to be integrated, talented, and successful in its student-centered educational model and always delivering positive energy. An expert from China’s Ministry of Education praised Huawai as “a fine and sunny university with great taste and holy ideals”. No matter you are a freshman or a first-year postgraduate, today is a new starting point for you. I hope you, dear Huawai students, will strive forward always in high spirit and with glorious dreams.

I hope you to hold great ideals in life. The famous philosopher Socrates once said, “The greatest happiness in the world is to fight for your ideals”. Great ideals are the beacon of life and source of motivation. We do not live only for ourselves, but more for helping others and serving the society, which in turn fulfills our life. Opportunities and challenges coexist in this digital age; I hope you will integrate your ideals into benevolence to others and the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation with your sense of mission and courage in crises!

Dear students, university life is where you absorb in knowledge and improve your abilities. The key of learning is to be diligent and perseverant. The famous writer Lu Xun said, “I’m by no means a genius writer. I just spend others’ coffee time on practicing writing.” Dear students, I hope you to seize every minute to make a difference every day and eventually outstanding. In your precious university years, it is wise to struggle for success, rather than wait idly for miracles. I hope you to cherish your university life to make something out of yourself.
希望你们明德修身，开创未来。古人讲，明德修身，齐家治国，而后平天下。“立身、立言、立德”，德是至关重要的。“德分两种，一种是智慧的德、另一种是行为的德。前者是从学习中得来的，后者是从实践中得来的。”一个人的品德如何，直接决定了这个人对社会的价值和贡献。希望同学们要培养自己为学和做人的高贵品质，做一个诚实守信，德才兼备的人；做一个心智健全，涵养深厚的人。希望同学们继续巩固军训成果，培养自己的意志力，培养自己语言综合运用能力，跨文化交际能力，实践创新能力，适应发展能力，要抓住每一个锻炼和提高的机会，展现自己的智慧和才华，尽最大的努力，做最好的自己！
Dear students, I hope you to cultivate high morality for a prosperous future. As the ancient Chinese saying goes, “One needs first to cultivate his morality before he can regulate his family, govern a state or even the world”. Morality needs to be cultivated both through learning and practice; it decides a person’s value and contribution to the society. I hope you to keep your integrity both in learning and in being and to extend your growth from the military training into ability upgrading in languages, cross-cultural communication, innovation practice and comprehensive development. Please make your best efforts to be the best self!

Your destiny is closely connected to that of Huawai the moment you chose to study here. A top university cultivates top talents, who in turn shape a top university. You are the hope of Huawai, whose future of becoming a century-old prestigious university is placed on your shoulders. The next few years will be the golden time for you to cultivate morality, accumulate knowledge and upgrade your abilities. I believe everyone here has dreams and values to realize.
