金秋结硕果，奋斗续华章。今天，我们在这里隆重举行2023级新生开学典礼，共同庆祝怀揣梦想的你们，经历疫情和高考的双重考验，加入吉外这个温暖的大家庭。在此，我代表全校师生向你们的到来表示热烈的欢迎！向受到表彰的先进集体和个人表示衷心的祝贺！
Today, we gather here on this golden autumn day to hold the opening ceremony for the Class of 2023, celebrating your arrival with dreams in your hearts. You have gone through the double test of the pandemic and the college entrance examination, and now you are joining the big family of JISU. On behalf of the all the faculty and students, I would like to extend a warm welcome to you all and my heartfelt congratulations to the recognized outstanding collectives and individuals.
同学们，你们注定是不平凡的一届学生，过去三年疫情所经历的一切，都将成为你们人生道路上最宝贵的精神财富。今天，你们站在了人生新的起点上，即将开启人生新的征程。同学们，你们选择了吉外，首先要了解吉外所承载的使命和责任，传承她所蕴藏的精神和文化。
Dear students, you are destined to be extraordinary. Everything you have experienced during the past three years will become the spiritual wealth for a lifetime. Today, standing at a new starting point in life, you are about to embark on a new journey. As students of JISU, it is important for you to understand the mission and responsibilities that JISU carries, and to inherit the spirit and culture it embodies.
这是一所发展迅速、充满希望的大学。吉外创办于1995年。28年来，学校实现了一个又一个跨越，在全国民办高等教育领域创造了多个“第一”或“唯一”。2007年，成为第一所也是目前唯一一所省属重点大学；2018年，成为第一所获批硕士学位授予权单位的民办大学；同年，成为第一所也是目前唯一一所更名为大学的民办高校。2020年，入选吉林省特色高水平应用型大学（A类）建设单位；2023年，成为博士学位授予单位A类立项建设高校。学校现已成为吉林省乃至东北地区培养高素质应用型外语外事人才的重要基地、吉林省培养“多语种翻译+”人才的摇篮、全国民办高等教育体制改革示范基地、世界多元文化融合的教育基地。学校创办虽然只有28年，但走过了一条艰苦卓绝而富有成效的办学之路。
JISU is a rapidly developing university with bright prospects. JISU has achieved one breakthrough after another, creating several “firsts” or “onlys” in the field of private higher education in China during the past 28 years since its founding in 1995. In 2007, it became the first and currently the only provincial key university. In 2018, it became the first private university to be approved for granting master’s degrees. In the same year, it became the first and currently the only private university to be renamed as a university. In 2020, it was selected as a construction unit for the characteristic high-level applied universities (Class A) in Jilin Province. In 2023, it will become a Class A project construction university for granting doctoral degrees. Our university has now become an important base for cultivating high-quality applied foreign language and foreign affairs talents in Jilin Province and in Northeast China. It is also a cradle for cultivating “multilingual translation+” talents in Jilin Province, a demonstration base for the reform of private higher education in China, and an educational base for the integration of diverse cultures worldwide. The past 28 years witnessed the difficult and fruitful path of school running that JISU has gone through.
这是一所高举公益性旗帜，致力于建设百年名校的大学。建校伊始，学校就确立了公益性办学思想，明确把公益性办学思想写入学校章程，是全国第一所捐资办学的非营利性民办大学，承担了国家探索非营利性民办高校办学模式试点的重任，取得了丰硕的理论和实践成果，走出了一条“民、特、新”的中国特色非营利性民办大学发展路径，成为中国非营利性办学的重要引领。
JISU upholds the banner of public welfare and is committed to building a century-old prestigious institution. Since its establishment, it has firmly established the concept of running the university for public welfare and explicitly written it into the university’s charter. It is the first non-profit private university in China to be funded by donations. It has undertaken the important task of exploring the model of non-profit private universities and has achieved fruitful theoretical and practical results. And it has embarked on a development path of “non-profit, distinctive, and innovative” Chinese non-profit private universities, making itself a pioneer in non-profit education in China.
这是一所办学声誉好、受到广泛赞誉的大学。自办学以来，学校始终秉持“一切为了学生成人、成才、成功”的办学理念，践行“以学生为中心，办最负责任教育”的教育理念，注重学生知识、能力、人格全面发展。毕业生凭借思想品德好、专业能力优、敬业精神强、综合素质高等优势，深受用人单位欢迎，获得教育部“全国毕业生就业典型经验高校50强”荣誉称号。学校连续4年位居软科中国民办大学排行榜首位。教育部评估专家组高度评价学校：“这是一所有境界、有品位、有追求、讲究修养、很阳光、很有定力的民办大学，是全国民办高校的旗帜”。
This is a university with a good reputation and wide acclaim. JISU has always adhered to the educational philosophy of “everything for the growth, success, and achievement of students” and implemented the educational concept of “putting students at the center and providing the most responsible education.” It emphasizes the comprehensive development of students’ knowledge, abilities, and character. Graduates are highly regarded by employers for their good moral character, professional competence, dedication, and comprehensive qualities. The university has been honored with the title of “Top 50 Universities with Exemplary Graduate Employment Experience” by the Ministry of Education. It has also ranked first in the ShanghaiRanking’s Academic Ranking of China’s private universities for four consecutive years. The evaluation expert group from the Ministry of Education spoke highly of the university as a private university with a high level of attainment, taste, pursuit, cultivation, energy, and strength, and that it is a flag-bearer among private universities in China.
同学们，大学是人类精神的高地，是探究科学前沿的殿堂，是名师荟萃的重镇，是实现梦想的沃土。大学也是现代社会的思想库，旨在提高学生的心智和精神、修养和文化，造就高尚人格。大学的价值在于扶植学术、激励创新、铸造精品、传播知识，使你们树立正确的世界观、人生观和价值观。大学是你们人生的黄金期，更是为未来奠基的关键期。同学们作出的每一个选择、付出的每一分努力都会对你们的人生产生深远而重大的影响。它将激励你们不断追求自我完善、自我发展，在孜孜不倦的求索中打牢坚实根基，更好地担负起对国家和社会的责任！
Dear students,University is the perfect place to explore the frontiers of science, a gathering place for distinguished teachers, and a fertile ground for realizing dreams. It is also a repository of ideas in modern society, aiming to enhance students’ intellect, spirit, cultivation, and culture, and to cultivate noble character. The value of university lies in nurturing academia, inspiring innovation, forging excellence, and disseminating knowledge, and help you establish the correct worldview, outlook on life, and values. University is the prime time of your life, and it is also a crucial period for laying the foundation for your future. Every choice you make, and every effort you put in will have a profound and significant impact on your life. The time here in JISU will inspire you to constantly strive for self-improvement and self-development, to explore new possibilities, and to better yourselves so as to shoulder the greater responsibilities for the country and society!
同学们，今天的你们，处在一个新时代。这是一个百年未有之大变局加速演进的时代，世界之变、时代之变、历史之变的特征更加明显；这是中国式现代化加快推进的时代，实现中华民族伟大复兴已进入不可逆转的历史进程；这是新一轮科技革命迅猛发展的时代，教育科技人才的基础性、战略性支撑作用更加凸显；这是建功立业、成就梦想的时代，从现在起到2035年基本实现现代化、到本世纪中叶全面建成社会主义现代化强国。可以说，你们的成长轨迹将与中国式现代化进程同频共振。9月7日，习近平总书记在东北考察时指出：“年轻一代成为奋力拼搏、振兴中华的一代，实现第二个百年奋斗目标就充满希望”。同学们，你们生逢其时、重任在肩。作为校长，借此机会，我对你们提出三点希望：
Dear students,You are living in a new era. An era of unprecedented changes, where the characteristics of global, epochal, and historical transformations are becoming clearer to see. An era of accelerated Chinese modernization, where the realization of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation has entered an irreversible historical process. An era of rapid development in the new round of technological revolution, where the foundational and strategic role of educational technology talents is becoming more prominent. And it is an era of making achievements and realizing dreams, from now until 2035 when the basic modernization is achieved, and to the middle of this century when a fully developed socialist modern country is built. Your growth trajectory will resonate with the Chinese modernization. On September 7th, General Secretary Xi Jinping pointed out during his inspection in Northeast China that “the realization of the second centenary goal is full of hope as the younger generation will become the generation that revitalizes China” You are born at the right time with important responsibilities on your shoulders. As president of JISU, I have great expectations in you.
希望你们坚定理想信念，筑牢成人基石。“志之所趋，无远弗届；志之所向，无坚不入”。理想如晨星，是力量的源泉。青年理想远大、信念坚定，是一个国家、一个民族无坚不摧的前进动力。古往今来，一切伟大成就的取得，都离不开理想信念的支撑和引领。不同的时代，总是赋予青年特定的使命与担当。强国建设、民族复兴，是当代中国青年的心之所向、行之所往。作为“强国新一代”，你们要胸怀祖国、志存高远，树立奉献强国伟业的奋斗目标，更好地实现人生价值、升华人生境界。同学们，大学是你们开阔视野的最重要的人生阶段。作为吉外学子，你们要从博大精深的中华优秀传统文化中汲取自信和底气，也要兼收并蓄，拓宽国际视野，学会欣赏、尊重世界文明的丰富多彩，增进多元文化理解，提升国际胜任能力。希望你们践行“会通中外、砺志敦材”的校训，学好外国语，做好中国人，努力成为有理想、有担当、有追求的时代新人，让青春扎根于祖国的热土，让梦想在强国之路上扬帆远航！
I hope you can firmly hold onto your ideals and beliefs, and lay a solid foundation for adulthood. “Where there is a will, there is a way; where there is determination, there is success.” Ideals are the source of strength. The lofty ideals and firm beliefs of young people are the driving force for a country or a nation. Throughout history, all great achievements are made under the support and guidance of ideals and beliefs. Different eras always endow young people with unique missions and responsibilities. As the “new generation for a strong country,” you should have a broad mind, aim high and realize your own life value in contributing to the great cause of the country. Dear students, university is the most important stage for broadening your horizons. As students of JISU, you should draw confidence and strength from the profound Chinese traditional culture, and also embrace inclusiveness, broaden your international perspective, learn to appreciate and respect the rich and diverse world civilizations, enhance your understanding of different cultures, and improve your international competence. I hope you can put in practice the school motto of “bridging the East and the West, sharpening your aspirations and talents,” learn foreign languages well, be a patriotic Chinese citizen and a global communicator.
希望你们练就过硬本领，构筑成才优势。“大志非才不就，大才非学不成”。学习是重塑自我、收获成长、实现理想最根本的途径。当今世界，知识加速更迭，交叉融合不断推进，ChatGPT代表的人工智能技术深度影响着人们的学习和生活，对未来人才的知识结构和能力素质都提出了更高要求。大学，最重要的事情是打好基础，学会如何学习，“不积跬步无以至千里，不积小流无以成江海”。无论学习方式如何变化，学习内容如何更新，学习标准如何提高，为学之要，贵在勤奋、贵在钻研、贵在有恒。著名教育家苏霍姆林斯基曾说，“真正的教育是自我教育”。玉不琢不成器，大学带给你们的是能力的塑造。思辨能力、学习能力、创新能力是你们增强未来发展后劲的核心素养。同学们要充分利用外国语大学的优势，在学精外语专业的同时，广泛涉猎其他专业知识，在交叉融合中拓宽自己的知识体系，用人工智能等信息技术赋能成长。正所谓“纸上得来终觉浅，绝知此事要躬行”，既要读万卷书，又要行万里路，在躬身实践中锤炼专业特长，培养语言综合运用能力、跨文化交际能力、实践创新能力和适应发展能力。希望你们传承“自强自律、求是求新”的学风，担起学习之责，深耕专业领域，拓展知识广度，强化创新思维，练就过硬本领，努力成为可堪大用、能担重任的栋梁之才！
I hope you can polish your skills and build your advantages. “Great aspirations cannot be achieved without talent, and great talent cannot be developed without learning.” Learning is the fundamental way to reshape oneself and achieve ideals. Knowledge is rapidly changing and inter-disciplinary study and integration is constantly advancing. Artificial intelligence technologies like ChatGPT are deeply influencing people’s learning and lives, and they are placing higher demands on the knowledge structure and competence of future talents. Dear students you should know that in college, the most important thing is to lay a solid foundation and learn how to learn. “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, and a river is formed by the accumulation of small streams.” You should cultivate your ability in independent thinking. No matter how learning methods change, how learning content updates, or how learning standards improve, the essence of learning lies in diligence, in-depth study, and perseverance. The famous educator Lev Vygotsky once said, “True education is self-education.” Just as a jade needs to be polished to become a valuable object, you become talents as university education shapes your abilities. The core qualities that will enhance your future development potential are critical thinking, learning ability, and innovation ability. you should make full use of the advantages of studying at a foreign language university. While excelling in your foreign language major, you should also explore a wide range of knowledge in other disciplines, broaden your knowledge system, and empower your growth with information technologies such as artificial intelligence. As the saying goes, “Knowledge gained from books is shallow, true understanding comes from practice.” You should not only read extensively but also travel extensively, honing your professional expertise through practical experience, cultivating language proficiency, cross-cultural communication skills, innovation abilities, and adaptability. 希望你们涵养高尚人格，厚积成功底蕴。“德不优者，不能怀远”。如果能力决定一个人能攀多高，品德则决定一个人能走多远。作为大学生，唯有常修立身之德，才能真正行稳致远。要培养虚怀若谷的气度，做到正视自己，欣赏他人，在学习中互勉，在生活中互助，在博采众长中拓宽成长的道路，在和而不同中提升人生的高度。同学们，想要向上成长，必须向下扎根。“天下大事必从细而做”。要知道，凡成大事者，必日积月累，持之以恒。“艰难方显勇毅，磨砺始得玉成。”成功不是一蹴而就，而是厚积薄发的积淀。成功的背后，是艰辛的努力；精彩的人生，是逆境的打磨。面对挫折或困难，要始终葆有执着坚韧、不惧逆境的人生底色，勇于面对挑战，敢于突破自我，终会体验“轻舟已过万重山”的境界。同学们，人生不是超越别人，而是超越自己，每个人的起点不同，取得的成绩可能不同，但全力以赴追求卓越的人生态度应该是相同的，要将吉外“严、精、细、实”的作风，内化于心，外化于行，成为一种生活方式和价值追求。希望你们弘扬“致远、务实、求精”的校风，不断锻造高尚谦逊的品格，锤炼坚韧不拔的意志，培育精益求精的精神，矢志追求卓越，收获成功人生！
I hope you can cultivate noble character and accumulate a solid foundation for success. “Without virtue, one cannot aspire to greatness.” While abilities determine how high a person can climb, one’s character determines how far he or she can go. As university students, only by constantly cultivating moral character can you truly achieve long-term stability and success. You should embrace a humble and open-minded attitude, recognize your own strengths and appreciate others, encourage each other in learning, support each other in life, broaden your growth path by learning from others, and elevate your life through harmonious differences. “Great things are achieved by starting from the minor details.” It is through difficulties that courage and perseverance are demonstrated, and honing that one can achieve excellence. Success is not achieved overnight, but rather through the accumulation of efforts over time.
